December 28, 1928 — October 6, 2019

McCordsville, Indiana

Zadel Marilyn McCoy Thixton passed away on October 6, 2019. She was born to Robert Charles McCoy and Elsie Casilda Werler McCoy on December 28, 1928. Her father died when Zadel was 3 years old from complications of mustard gas used in WWI. Her mother, Elsie, did the very best she could to provide for Zadel’s Brother, Robert C. McCoy, Jr. who was three years older than Zadel at the time of her father’s death. Her brother was the best big brother ever! Her mother worked as a clerk at Stationer’s Store, downtown Indianapolis, and when Zadel got old enough she worked there too. Her mother also worked for the Republican Party for several years.

Zadel attended Broad Ripple High School. It was there, at the Broad Ripple swimming pool, that she met the love of her life. He was James Edward Thixton, two years older and a total show off, winning her heart! She was a sophomore at Arsenal Technical High School, and he was senior. Jim enlisted in the Navy and after graduating, he went to war. Zadel and he wrote constantly and couldn’t wait for the war to end so they could be married. Jim came safely home, and they were married at Christ Church Cathedral downtown Indianapolis. July 31, 1948. Zadel and Jim both loved animals and CoCo their Irish Setter was included in their wedding party. She was also partial to cats!

Soon, daughter Jami Sue was born November 22, 1949. Soon after, James Edward Jr. was born March 24, 1951. Family time was spent vacationing in Michigan, and Canada. Zadel loved fishing and camping. Many great times were spent water skiing and boating.

Zadel absolutely loved her bowling! She was secretary of her bowling league for 62 years, beginning at Meadows Bowl and ending up at All Star Bowl. She was well loved by all her bowlers, they always looked forward to the cartoons she put on their bowling sheets and her planning of holiday parties! She and Jim bowled in several couples’ leagues.

In her memory, donations may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Association.
