Yazmin Jamal Westin

May 25, 1971 — March 8, 2018

Zionsville, Indiana

Yazmin Jamal Westin (ne Masud) died after a courageous battle with cancer, on March 8, 2018 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the age of 46

Yazmin is survived by her father and stepmother (Jamal and Nuha Masud) of Sinjil, West Bank; Eric Westin, husband; David, Isabel, Alia and Olivia Westin, her beloved children; Farid (Sundus) Masud, brother; Monirah Masud, sister; Radif (Sophie) Masud, brother; Labibah Masud, sister; Glenn (Bonnie) Westin, father-in-law; Peter (Tammy) Westin, brother-in-law. She is a beloved aunt of many precious nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by Carmen Milagros Cintron-Green Masud, her mother.

Yazmin was born on May 25, 1971 in Christiansted, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, to Jamal and Carmen Masud. She spent her formative years in small town mid-west, graduating salutatorian from Plano High School in 1989. Yazmin often worked full time putting herself (and her husband) through college, and through determination, graduated in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and English Literature. She married Eric Westin, her college sweetheart on January 7, 1995. After working for Securitas in Chicago, she supported her husband’s career, moving to Indianapolis in 2004. Between 2004 and 2011, the couple welcomed 4 children into their home and Yazmin began her life’s calling: motherhood. She brought all 4 children through Speedway Co-op Preschool, allowing her further participation through the early development process.

Yazmin was generous with her time and had endless compassion. Her beloved mother-in-law Mary Anne Westin was an influential role model, and Yazmin became an active member of Speedway Baptist Church. She empathized with the disadvantaged, most recently volunteering with MigrosAid Indy, an English as a second language group hosted at her church: the group composed of immigrants, many from war torn countries, freely donating her time, clothes, cooking, and childcare. In the rare moments between the needs of her children, Yazmin enjoyed style and loved the hunt for a bargain. She enjoyed most her long conversations with her family and friends, a movie and dinner date with her husband, and just about any mystery, whether page or screen; from Nancy Drew as a child to Wallendar novels, particularly enjoying the latter’s social commentary, which tied together her loves of literature and sociology.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 11 from 4-7pm at Flanner Buchanan-Zionsville, 105 West Pine St., Zionsville. Additional visitation will take place Monday, March 12 from noon-1pm at Speedway Baptist Church, 2986 Moller Road, Indianapolis with services to follow at 1pm. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis immediately following the service. Pastor Mark McClintock will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Yazmin’s life.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the MigrosAid Indy/English as a Second Language Club (https://allegrosolutions.org/donate, donation code MigrosAid.JVV), or to the Speedway Baptist Church.
