Wilma Louise Sloan

May 13, 1924 — July 17, 2020

Avon, Indiana

Wilma Louise Sloan, 96, loving mother and doting grandmother passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 17, 2020. She was born May 13, 1924 in Rockville, Indiana to William and Gladys Hardesty. She graduated from Rockville High School.

She met the love of her life and married Thomas Russell Sloan, Sr on March 11, 1949.

She moved to Eagledale from Ladoga, Indiana in 1956 where she raised her children.

Wilma was a strong woman and became the matriarch of the Sloan family in 1981, when she lost her husband young. She was a Blueprint Engineer for many years at RCA. Once Wilma retired, she became a career caregiver for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Even neighbors and friends of family became family. She was a staple in the neighborhood for many years. Wilma enjoyed baking and cooking for “an army”. Her passion was always working with her hands and was incredible at cross stitching and had a green thumb to bring any plant or flower to life. Wilma loved to watch baseball, and she would tell you she could never decide if her favorite team was the Chicago Cubs or the Cincinnati Reds so since she lived in between she was always in between deciding. Everyone who knew Wilma knew when a baseball game was on, it would be on at her house and to not stand in front of the television unless you wanted to be scolded. She was known for her chair with a book and control of the television. Granny had a hard time saying no to animals so the house was also a small zoo: dogs, cats, snakes, guinea pig, fish, iguana just to name a few over the years. Throughout her life, she was passionate about her family and always had a lot of love to give. She kept in touch over the years with friends and never missed an “Old Folks” meeting with her retired friends at RCA. She hosted friends from out of town every year for the Indianapolis 500 race. Wilma made sure no one left hungry or without a sweet. She had a hand in raising friends of all of her children and grandchildren. When you hear it takes a village to raise a child, she was deeply apart of that village.

Wilma is survived by her daughter Evadine Brooks (William), daughter in laws Terri Sloan (Don), Sandy Thomas; grandchildren T.R. Sloan (Andrea), Jeb Sloan (Lisa), Eva Sloan (Rick), Michael Thomas (Lori), Michelle Thomas and Misty Rosener; great grandchildren Billy, Alan, Jordan, Meghan, Justin, Jackson, Jacob, Mary Kate, Andrew, Oscar, Alaina, and Charlotte and Morghan. Extended friends that became family, Janet Edwards, Missy and Troy Eller, Terri and Randy Lambert, Scott (Carrie) Lambert, Jessica (Matthew) Marshall, Justin Eller, Zachary Eller and Andrew Eller.

She is preceded in death by Thomas R Sloan, Sr (husband), Billy Thomas (son), Thomas R. Sloan, Jr. (Son), and Charles Sloan (Great grandson).

Wilma’s life will be celebrated at Flanner Buchanan – Speedway. Visitations will be from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2020. Service for Wilma will be at 1:00 pm on Friday, July 10, 2020.
