William Styring III, 72, Carmel, passed away November 6, 2017. He was born October 17, 1945, in Indianapolis, the son of the late William Jr. and Catherine (Lyzott) Styring. In 1973, he married Ellen (Simpson) Styring.
Bill was a graduate of Manuel High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wabash College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Harvard University, where he received his Master of Arts. He later became a doctoral candidate at Indiana University.
Bill served as chief of staff for the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee from 1969-1974, economist for the Indiana Budget Agency from 1974-1979, and chaired the Indiana Revenue Forecast Committee from 1976-1984.
He was the “numbers guy” of former Gov. Otis “Doc” Bowen’s 1973 property tax relief plan. In 1992, he became the Benjamin Rogge Chair for Public Policy at the Indiana Policy Review Foundation. He also was senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank that was headquartered in Indianapolis from 1984 to 2004. Bill also contributed as a columnist for the Indiana Business Journal. He was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Bowen.
Aside from his successful career as an economist, Bill will be remembered as a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ellen Styring; three children, Benjamin Styring, Alison Styring, and Meredith (Taher) Khatib; and two grandsons, David and Zack.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 10, 2017, at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
