William Stephen “Steve” Harnedy
Born March 5, 1947 – Passed January 20, 2025
William Stephen “Steve” Harnedy, a loyal, humble, and generous soul, left this world on January 20, 2025, surrounded by close family and the music of his beloved Beach Boys. Steve never knew a stranger. His infectious pride for his family, community, and Southport High School left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Steve graduated from Southport High School in 1965 and carried a deep love for his alma mater throughout his life. As the co-founder of the Southport High School Alumni Association, Steve’s dedication has helped the organization award over $1.4 million in scholarships to deserving Southport seniors. Known affectionately as “Mr. Southport,” Steve braved rain, sleet, and snow to cheer on the Cardinals at basketball, football, and baseball games. His love for Southport and the southside community was both unwavering and contagious.
Beyond his dedication to Southport, Steve’s greatest joy was his family. He was the devoted husband of 54 years to his beautiful wife, Barbara, whom he always claimed he “married up.” Together, they built a legacy of love and devotion. He leaves behind his daughters, Kim (Patrick) Butler and Kara Welch; his granddaughter, Ashley Delp; grandsons, Austin Delp, Collin Smith, and Evan Smith; and his cherished great-grandsons, his best buddies, Luchion, Lennox, and Lazarus Jones. Steve also leaves behind his beloved sister, Marcy Baker, and countless family and friends who brought immense happiness to his life.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, William Harnedy, and his mother, Bettie Lee (Winchester) Harnedy, along with many beloved pets and countless family and friends. There’s no doubt he’s already telling everyone in heaven about his family, how much it has grown, and how deeply he loves them.
A proud member of the Masonic fraternity, Steve was a 56-year Mason, dedicating decades of service to the principles of brotherhood, charity, and community. His commitment to the values of Freemasonry mirrored the love and support he extended to everyone in his life.
Steve’s passions were as vibrant as his personality. A proud Indiana University, New York Yankees and Indianapolis Indians fan, he held season tickets to the latter and often attended games with Barb, Kim, and Patrick. His love for baseball extended to coaching American Legion and Edgewood Pony League teams, where he nurtured young talent and shared his love of the game. He also took immense pride in his immaculate yard—earning him the unofficial title of “Best Yard in the Neighborhood.”
One of Steve’s favorite ways to connect with others was through Facebook, where he cultivated a large network of friends. Whether he was checking in on others, posting updates, or sharing funny and sometimes questionable posts, Steve’s presence brought joy to thousands online. He loved the way social media kept him connected to old friends, new friends, and the community he cherished so deeply.
Steve also knew how to appreciate life’s simple pleasures, and his favorites became part of his signature charm. He loved a good Diet Pepsi—in a huge Styrofoam cup, of course. Chick-fil-A chicken strips with way too much ranch, Fazoli’s breadsticks with garlic butter, endless shrimp at Red Lobster, Rolos and chocolate éclairs from Boyden’s Bakery were among his favorite indulgences, each bite bringing him pure joy.
Weekends found Steve cheering on his great-grandsons at their sporting events and attending mass with Barbara at St. Barnabas Catholic Church every Sunday morning.
Steve faced his diagnosis of brain cancer on November 27, 2024, with the same toughness and determination that defined his life. He fought valiantly, cherishing every moment with his loved ones. His final day was spent listening to the music he loved, surrounded by family.
Steve was a model of loyalty, resilience, and love—a man who truly embodied what it means to live a meaningful life. His family hopes his story inspires others to live with the same passion and commitment he exemplified.
In honor of Steve’s love for both Southport and IU, we ask that attendees wear red and white to his services.
As the Southport Cardinals cheer during every home game touchdown, we know Steve’s spirit is soaring with these words:
“Let that Cardinal fly!”

Washington St. Funeral services will be held 11am Thursday January 30th at Flanner Buchanan- Washington Park East. Graveside service to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis.
