William LeRoy McGinley, 87, died on Monday, October 15th, 2018 at the Curis Care Facility in Waynesboro, Virginia. Bill was a dedicated husband to his wife of 63 years, Phyllis Rae McGinley, who preceded him in death. Bill and Phyllis’ greatest work and enduring legacy is their large and loving family.
Bill was born on April 7th, 1931 in Minot, North Dakota, the eldest son of Charles William McGinley and Vera Ione Strege. Bill received a perfect attendance award for never missing a day of school from kindergarten to twelfth grade and was a three-sport athlete at Minot Senior High School, excelling in basketball, football and track. His senior year, he helped lead the Minot Magicians to an undefeated season and state championship title in 1949. Bill went on to play college basketball at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Bill and Phyllis met at UND and were married on February 22nd, 1953 in Minot, North Dakota. Bill was a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1954 – 1956 and served as a statistical services officer during the Korean War, stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
After the service, he had a career in the insurance business, living in Coon Rapids, Minnesota; Fairborn, Ohio; Brookfield, Wisconsin; Columbus, Indiana; Dayton, Ohio and Carmel, Indiana before retiring from the industry in 1996. From 1996 – 2013 Bill was a kind and dedicated employee of St. Vincent New Hope in Indianapolis, Indiana where he worked as a driver and care giver for New Hope residents. By far, Bill’s greatest joy was coaching and cheering for his children and grandchildren throughout their various athletic and academic pursuits. Bill was active in the Carmel Dad’s Club youth sports organization in the 1980’s, serving as a volunteer softball coach and league commissioner, and volunteer with other community members who helped turn 39 acres of farmland into what is now the Mark Badger Memorial Park sports complex in Carmel, Indiana. Bill attended the Carmel United Methodist Church and St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Carmel, Indiana as well as the Fishersville United Methodist Church in Fishersville, Virginia. He was also an active member of the Waynesboro Senior Center and volunteer at the Augusta County Library in Virginia.
Bill’s family, friends and neighbors will remember his outgoing personality and sense of humor. Bill loved to play cards, especially bridge, and follow sports on TV. Bill loved spending time with small children and will be remembered for patiently reading books, coloring pictures, playing games and taking walks to feed the ducks at the neighborhood lake. Neighbors will remember his friendly wave from the front porch or driveway of his Carmel home where he lived for 36 years.
Bill is survived by three daughters, Willow Dee Rae (Horace Porter) Hambrick of Georgetown, KY; Shyla Jean (Larry) Toering of Tulsa, OK; and Heather Belle (Matt) Haas of Carmel, IN; two sons, William LeRoy (Jackie) McGinley, Jr. of Fishersville, VA and Charles Howard McGinley of Union City, GA; one brother, Charles (Gaynell) McGinley of San Ramon, CA; one sister, Ellie Fugelso of Minot, ND; 24 grandchildren and 14 (soon to be 15) great grandchildren.
