Dr. William M. Wiebenga, 80, Carmel, passed away February 19, 2018. He was born February 11, 1938, in Burlington, WI, the son of the late Martin Peter and Florence (DeGraaff) Wiebenga. He married Audrey Stanton on June 22, 1962. Bill graduated from Calvin College (’60) with a B.A in Philosophy and English. He went on to Yale University where he earned his PhD in Philosophy (’66).
He began his career teaching at American University where he transitioned into administration, and continued in administrative roles at Texas Christian University and Wittenberg University, followed by his tenure as President of Central College in Pella, Iowa.
Bill and Audrey retired to Carmel in 1997 where they built strong relationships at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church. He was an active member participating in Bible study, Stephen Ministry, teaching classes, and served as an elected elder and trustee. He enjoyed “Making a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord” by participating in the Orchard Park Presbyterian Choir, singing with a Shapenote group, and enjoying songs around the campfire at family reunions.
Bill spent hours at Connor Prairie as Dr. Campbell, the town’s doctor, explaining to visitors and students the state of medicine in the 1800s. He continued his commitment to learning and serving the community by volunteering on the Carmel Clay Public Library Board.
Bill was passionate about biblical study, in particular the life of Christ. He also enjoyed political discourse and studying and writing about the history of American politics.
Bill and Audrey were strong supporters of the performing arts. He also greatly enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in the back yard as well as tending the flowers and plants around the house.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Audrey Wiebenga; three children, Marlyse (Esam Abdelhafez) Wiebenga, Lynndelle (Erik) Pratt, Gabriel (Brandy) Wiebenga; five grandchildren, Sylvan, Senna, Annelise, Isaac, Isaiah; brother, Robert (Edy) Wiebenga; four sisters, Nancy Dykhuis, Sandy (Richard) Strikwerda, Marge (Paul) Achterhof, and Beth (Rich) Bosscher; cousins Henry (Karen), Bob, Linda DeGraaff; and sisters-in-law; Fern Emma (Arthur) Pruiksma, Elizabeth (Joseph ) Dullek, and Cornelia Ruff; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by twin granddaughters, Ella and Katrine Pratt.
Memorial gifts may be made to Orchard Park Presbyterian Church or Carmel Clay Public Library.
Public viewings will be held at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church Friday, February 23, from 4:00-6:00PM and Saturday, February 24, from 12:00 – 1:00PM.
The funeral service will be held at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church Saturday, February 24, at 1:00PM.
