William F. Thoms

80, of Indianapolis, passed away on October 28, 2017. Bill graduated from Schulte High School in Terre Haute, Indiana; Indiana State Teachers College and Indiana University School of Law, Indianapolis Division.

He was a practicing attorney for over 50 years. Bill was the first law student bailiff in Marion County Municipal Court #1; a Marion County Probate Court Commissioner, pioneer in the Public Defender System trying many probono cases.

He was a member of the Indianapolis Bar Association and was on the board of Managers in the 1970’s.

He was a candidate for Marion County Circuit Court Judge in 1990. Bill was a member of the Indianapolis Law Club. He was an enthusiastic volunteer at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

Bill was an avid fisherman ~ fishing all over North America and the Caribbean. He was a voracious reader of history and mysteries. General George Custer and Sherlock Holmes were two of his favorites. Some of his best times were spent on the Civil War Battlefields including Little Round Top at Gettysburg and walking across Burnsides Bridge at Antietam.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Thoms; sons, Joseph F. and Christopher (Maribah) M Thoms; grandchildren, William Thoms and Harper Rhimes; sisters, Carol, Kathy, Marilyn, Patty and Janet and brother, Jim. Visitation will be Thursday, November 2, 2017 from 4 to 8 pm at Flanner Buchanan-Broad Ripple. Services will be Friday, November 3, 2017 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.
