William A. Niemann
Brownsburg – William A. “Bill” Niemann, 87, formerly of Speedway, IN, passed away on January 23, 2018.
Bill was born in Indianapolis on April 11, 1930. He graduated from Washington High School in Indianapolis in 1948, where he was a standout in track & field and basketball. He was an Indiana All-Star in basketball in 1948, and was the first Indiana All-Star from Washington. Bill attended Purdue University and Butler University for two years before beginning work in Data Processing at General Motors. He worked at GM for 35 years, and at EDS for six years, before retiring in 1991.
He married Joann Linville in 1950. They lived in Speedway for 45 years, where he was very active in the community. He served on the town’s Park Board, was a member of the Speedway Lions Club, coached youth football there, as well as basketball at Municipal Gardens in Indianapolis, and co-founded the youth basketball league in Speedway. He also worked a few years as a yellow shirt security guard during Indy 500 weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 2003, Bill and Joann moved to Brownsburg, IN, where they made many good friends. He served on the HOA board for Holiday Pines III for 11 years.
Bill loved to play golf and bowl and spend time with friends. He also was a big Chicago Cubs fan, and was very glad to see them win the World Series in 2016. He loved to spend time with his family, and they enjoyed many big Sunday dinners together.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Countryside Meadows, Brownsburg Health Care Center and IU Health West Hospital, for their care during Bill’s four-year illness.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joann, daughter Cheri, sons David, Jeff, Tim and Bill (Margaret), and grandchildren Korey (Jessica) Niemann, Megan (Kyle) Havlik, Briley Niemann, and Lily Feeley.
Calling will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018, from 4 to 8 PM, at Flanner Buchanan-Speedway, with additional calling there on Tuesday, January 30, from Noon to 1 PM, and the funeral at 1 PM.
