William A. Brown, 85, Indianapolis, and formerly of ElkGrove Village, IL passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 14, 2017. He was born September 14, 1931 in Detroit,the son of James Arley and Genevieve (Fisher) Brown.
William moved to Indianapolis in 1983. He worked for Kiwanis International for over30 years in many different capacities serving the world's children. While Bill's accomplishments with Kiwanis aremanifold, the one he was most proud of was his part in eradicating IodineDeficiency Disorder (IDD) around the world as coordinator of the WorldwideService Project and Kiwanis International Foundation director. In this role he traveled the world meetingthose affected, participating in World Health Conferences and spreading thegoodwill for which he will be remembered.
He served in the Army (active duty) from 1955 to 1957 and in thereserves from 1957 to 1963. Bill livedto serve others. He was active in fundraisingand other capacities at St. Monica's Catholic Church. At Christmas time he rangbells and coordinated bell ringers all around Indianapolis for the SalvationArmy.
William was married to Bonnie S. Brown on August 4, 1956,who preceded him in death by five weeks. He was also preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Lauren,and his son-in-law, Mark Gregg.
Bill is survived by his son, James K. Brown (Ann), and hisdaughters, Debra Betts (Frank), and Catherine Gregg; and his eightgrandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 20at 10 AM at St. Monica Catholic Church, 6131 Michigan Road, Indianapolis.Visitation will be on Sunday, March 19 from 3-5 PM at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. W. Drive. Entombment will be inWashington Park North Cemetery.
