Wendell Grant Voss died peacefully on Thursday, October 11, 2018 in Carmel, Indiana at the age of 91.
Wendell was born Sept 16, 1927 in Sioux City, Iowa to Rev. Walter A. Voss and Carroll Schell Voss. He received a degree in Ceramic Engineering from Iowa State University and MBA from Case Western Reserve. He married Ann Miller of Sioux City, Iowa in 1951, they were married for 64 years, until her death in 2015.
Wendell had a long career in the ceramics industry and was a serial inventor. He held a patent on porcelain enamels with a metallic finish. Early in his career he was part of the team that designed ceramic material for the nascent space programme. His patent for high temperature, mechanically strong joints between adjacent refractory panels, made the heat shields for the Apollo spacecraft and Space Shuttle possible. He also held a patent for the design of a porous tundish nozzle used in steel making. His biography was featured in Who’s Who in America.
Wendell was active in the church all of his life and most recently served as a deacon at Crestview Presbyterian Church in West Chester, Ohio.
Survivors include two children; Katherine Everitt-Newton (David) of Bracknell, United Kingdom and William Voss(Janell) of Carmel, Indiana; a sister Mariel Haugen(Roger) of St. Cloud, Minnesota; and beloved grandson, Matthew Voss.
Private funeral services will be held in Sioux City, Iowa on November 17, 2018.
