Virginia Quebbeman-Surdi

Passed away peacefully on December 4, 2018 at the age of 90. Virginia was born on December 17, 1927 in Mauckport, IN as the daughter of Merrill R. and Frieda Love Shireman.

After graduating high school, Virginia continued her education at Indiana University where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the IU School of Music, and later a Master’s in Education. Virginia soon started her career in teaching, where she spent 30 ½ years as an elementary music teacher. With twenty-five of those years being spent at the Wayne Township School System. During these years of teaching, Virginia was able to share her love for music and the piano with all her students. Upon retiring from teaching, Virginia enjoyed playing tennis, tutoring,  traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She was a proud member of the Chapel Rock Christian Church where she spent time playing the organ and serving as a choir director. Virginia was also a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority and the Indianapolis Symphony Women’s Society.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Dale W. Quebbeman and James Surdi; sons, Wesley and Brent Quebbeman; and brother, Harold Shirman.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Gary) Aranjo; grandchildren, James and Eric Quebbeman, Heather Blanchette; 7 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Rosemary Giesy and Peggy Byerly.

A Gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, December 14 from 2:30-3:30pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park North. A Celebration of Life will start at 3:30pm, also at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Chapel Rock Christian Church and the Alzheimer’s Association, alz.org.
