Virginia Louise Gillette of Indianapolis was born in Toledo, Ohio, on March 6, 1936 and died peacefully on July 31, 2024 in Carmel, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Radford P. Potter and Miriam Hill Potter, and her husband of 65 years, William B. Gillette. Virginia is survived by nieces Margaret G. Ahrens and Linda G. Downs, nephew David R. Gillette, and family friend Laura Goetz.
Virginia was a graduate of The Ohio State University and received her Master of Library Science degree at the Pratt Institute. In 1957, she and William were married at Washington Congregational Church in Toledo, Ohio.
In 1967, Virginia and William came to Indianapolis, where they lived ever since. Virginia worked as a reference librarian for a number of years at Irwin Library at Butler University. Virginia filled her life with books, reading, music, and travel. Virginia loved cats, and her dear pets were always a very important part of her life. She also enjoyed tennis and played recorder with the Indianapolis Recorder Society.
A simple graveside service in the church memorial garden will take place at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 7171 N. Pennsylvania St, Indianapolis, Ind., 46240, on Monday, August 12, at 12:30 pm. All are welcome. Memorial gifts may be sent to the First Congregational Church or the Humane Society (IndyHumane, 7929 Michigan Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268 (indyhumane.org).
