Virginia (Dassel) Wirthwein, 89, Fishers, Ind., passed away November 23, 2018.
She was born July 19, 1929, in Evansville, Ind., to the late Wilbur F. and Edith Virginia (Carter) Dassel. She was graduated from Benjamin Bosse High School, Evansville, in 1947 and received a bachelor’s degree with majors in English and Elementary Education from Evansville College in 1950.
She was married to Alfred F. Wirthwein, of Evansville, owner of Kirby’s, Inc., in 1950. In 1991, after 41 years of marriage, Mr. Wirthwein preceded her in death.
For many years, Mrs. Wirthwein taught preschool at Totten Hall, First Presbyterian Church, Evansville. After raising her children, she worked for the Vanderburgh County Area Plan Commission. She was an active volunteer in her home town, serving others through Meals on Wheels, the Evansville Soup Kitchen, and as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.
She was a world traveler, visiting many countries with her husband, friends and family. Her journeys took her to Japan, Australia, France, Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Morocco, Iceland, Mexico, Canada and the Maritime Islands, Bermuda and places across the U.S. from Alaska to Maine.
In 2001, she moved to Fishers, Ind. to be near several of her children. While there she became active in Carmel Newcomers and Second Presbyterian Church Bazaar ministry.
She is survived by five children: Susan Wirthwein, Carmel, Ind., Lisa Wirthwein, Fishers, Ind., Kevin (Erin) Wirthwein, Fishers, Ind., Christopher (Sally) Wirthwein, Carmel, Ind. and David (Shannon) Wirthwein, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; grandchildren: Matthew (Grace) King, Indianapolis, Ind., Peter King, Indianapolis, Ind., Benjamin (Anna) Farris, Glenview, Ill., Christopher (Betsy) Farris, Lexington, Ky., Andrew (Kate Lambert) Farris, Fryeberg, Maine, Allison (Darin Pirtle – fiancé) Wirthwein, Carmel, Ind., Abby (Nick) Nicholson, Carmel, Ind., Andrea Wirthwein, Fishers, Ind., Lauren Wirthwein, Fishers, Ind., Alexander Wirthwein, Carmel, Ind., Grace (Jordan) Speckman, Carmel, Ind., Emily Wirthwein, New York, N.Y.; great-grandchildren: Vivienne and Mary King, Henry, Emma, Charlotte, Wyatt and Cora Farris; cousins: Jeanne Carter, Evansville, Ind. and Virginia (Dick) Elder, Bloomington, Ind.; and nieces and nephews: Brian Schymik, Christine Schymik Federman, Katrina Schymik Abjornson, Mark Schymik, Scott Schymik.
Visitation in Indianapolis will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), 9700 Allisonville Road.
Visitation in Evansville will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (CST) Thursday, November 29, 2018, at Sunset Funeral Home, 1800 Saint George Road.
