Verna was born on September 20, 1928, in Decatur, Illinois, to Charles and Aletha Houk. The family moved to Indianapolis when she was six years old. She graduated from Shortridge High School in 1946 and married Max D. Boots (Indiana Architect) August 9, 1947. Max (a graduate of Broad Ripple H.S.) preceded her in death in 1988.
Verna worked for the Indiana Gas Company in her early years of marriage, and later helped open the Carmel License Branch, where she worked for many years. She was a charter member of the Carmel Christian Church, a member of the Golden Glow and Spring Green Indiana Garden Clubs, as well as the National Garden Club. Verna was also a Red Hat Society Member, a Cub Scout leader, and a founding member and past president of the Carmel Homemakers Club. Verna loved gardening, flower arranging, ceramics, and traveling with her husband Max to the annual CSI meetings. Verna also thoroughly enjoyed camping, boating, fishing, and years at their Lake Sweetwater cabin with her family and friends in Brown County (Indiana). After Max’s passing she continued to travel around the world with family and friends whenever given the opportunity. In her most recent years, Verna enjoyed living at Marquette Manor in Indianapolis, where she frequently played cards, poker, and bingo, and was active with water aerobics, yoga, and volunteering in various capacities. Anyone who ever met and got to know Verna throughout her long, happy life, had found a new friend.
Verna is survived by three sons (Ron (LuAnn), Jim (Susan), and Dan (Valerie)); eight grandchildren (Andrew (Sally), Jessica (John), Max, Madelyn, Calvin, Henry, Riley, and Lily); and two great-grandchildren (Reagan and Camden). She was preceded in death by her three siblings – Dorothy Glenn, Florence Logan, and Roy Houk.
Friends and family are invited to gather from 11:00am to 12:30pm on Saturday December 22, 2018 at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), where a funeral service will begin at 12:30pm.
Verna’s family would like to thank the loving and caring staff at Marquette Manor, the St. Vincent’s Neuro ICU, and the St. Vincent’s Hospice staff for their comforting support of Verna and the entire Boots family during her last several months, especially in her last few days with us. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the CSI Indianapolis Chapter Educational Foundation, Inc., Box 55751, Indianapolis, IN 46205, or to the Marquette Manor Foundation, 8140 Township, Indianapolis, IN 46260.
