Verda Lynne Marchesseault, age 87, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, January 31, 2025.
Born on January 4, 1938, in Petersburg, Indiana, Verda was the daughter of Charles and Esta Mae (Rumble) Killion. She was lovingly raised with the support of her aunts, Florence and Eloise Killion, and her stepfather, Tom Tislow. Verda had one brother, Charles David Killion, and one sister, Martha Ann Rutledge. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and sons.
Verda was a devoted mother to her three children: Jeffrey (Jean) Buttrum, Robin Buttrum, and Julie (Junior) Evans. She also cherished her three stepchildren: Marcus Marchesseault, Jeff (Sharleen) Marchesseault, and Michelle Marchesseault. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren—Rick Boyd, Amy (Jonathan) Hamby, Ross Buttrum, Michelle Fleming, Emily Buttrum, and Makiya Evans—and her great-grandchildren Atreyu Evans, Robert Hamby, and Shelby Hamby. She also shared a special bond with her beloved dog, Jaxon.
A dedicated educator and collaborator, Verda played a pivotal role in founding the Key School in Indianapolis as both a teacher and principal. Known for her humor, spunk, and gift for storytelling, she left an indelible mark on those who knew her. Verda loved music and was an avid fan of the Indiana Pacers and Cincinnati Reds. A proud member of Job's Daughters International and the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was a passionate advocate for equal rights and a champion for the less fortunate.
Verda was a dedicated member of Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, where she took great pleasure in assisting with church bazaars and other activities.
Verda was married to Paul Marchesseault, who preceded her in death just nine days earlier on January 22, 2025.
A double visitation for Paul and Verda will be held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East Funeral Center located at 10722 E. Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana 46229.
A funeral service will follow at 3:00 PM. Rev. Hannah Ostlund of Second Presbyterian Church will officiate.
Private burial for both Verda and Paul will be at Washington Park East Cemetery.
Verda’s memory will forever be cherished by those who loved her.
In honor of Verda's lifelong dedication to children's education, donations may be made to the Indianapolis Public Schools Foundation.
