Vera Aitken, 88, of Indianapolis, passed away on June 26, 2019.
Vera was born in Queens Park in London, England on August 2, 1930 to the late Ernest and Harriet Buckland. Married to Allan Aitken of Preston, Lancashire, England, July 1948.
In 1952, Vera and Allan decided to live the American Dream by moving to the United States via the Mauritania, a Cunard Cruise Liner out of Liverpool, England, raising 4 children in Indianapolis. After being a homemaker for many years, Vera worked for Johnny Kool Oldsmobile on the east side of Indianapolis as a title clerk before moving on to work for the State of Indiana, Unemployment Office, retiring in 1995. Vera was a master knitter, winning numerous ribbons at the Indiana State Fair as well as a Girl Scout Leader and Camp Director at Camps Dellwood, Gallahue, Wildwood, and Ada in the 60’s and 70’s.
Vera is survived by her children, Anne (Gary) Mace, Pamela Aitken, Allen (Donna) Aitken; grandchildren, Kelly, Jodi, Suzanne, Amanda, Michael; 4 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as her grand ”dog” Jasper, . She is preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Allan Aitken, eldest daughter Susan “Susie” Aitken, sisters Louisa Clark and Ivy Gerth, brother Ernest Buckland.
Friends and family are invited to gather from 4:00-8:00pm on Monday, July 1, 2019 at Flanner Buchanan- Washington Park East. A funeral service will take place 11:00am on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. She will be laid to rest at Washington Park East Cemetery.
