On Monday, February 8, 2021, Valinda Burt, a loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully at the age of 43. Born in Indianapolis, IN, to John and Jean Stevenson, Valinda grew up in a close Christian home amongst her sisters Machon, Rolanda, and LaThelma. Their home was filled with tremendous joy as they relished their time and experiences with each other daily.
Valinda lived her life as the ultimate caregiver with the number one priority being a mother extending continuous love for her children, Jalen, Ava, and Eden.
Valinda lived an active life including dance, softball, traveling, experiencing many things, and engaging with many friends and family. She grew up as a member of Sanders Temple Church of Christ and has been a member of the Traders Point Christian Church for several years.
After graduating from North Central High School in 1996, Valinda became a mother (Jalen) and went on to attain a BS in Business (Accounting with a concentration in Computer Information Systems) from Indiana University – Bloomington in 2000. Valinda received scholarships from General Motors and minority achievers. While at Indiana University, Valinda was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Diversity Business Club.
Motivated to love and provide for Jalen, Valinda initially started a successful career in tax compliance at Ernst & Young, a global accounting, tax, consulting, and advisory firm. As her career progressed over 10 years, she leveraged her skill set to serve Sanders Temple Church of God in Christ in an accounting capacity.
On September 11, 2003, Valinda Stevenson and John Burt were married leading to the next phase of life including years of great experiences and memories. In addition to Valinda’s focus on being a mother and wife, she also leveraged her professional skills to support the JumpStart Advisory Group and was a 50/50 member of Stevenson Burt & Assoc, a family business.
Later in life after having additional children (Ava and Eden) as well as suffering the death a child (Levi), Valinda was driven to change her career purpose to align with her way of life as a caregiver. While continuing to be a mother, wife, and working part-time, Valinda attained a nursing degree from Marian University.
As a nurse at Indiana University Riley Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Valinda regularly encouraged families influenced by her belief, faith, and own journey with life challenges in general, but specifically in the NICU. Valinda personally experienced multiple pre-mature births in her own life, including one with a 3-month stay in the NICU. Additionally, Valinda personally experienced a stillborn.
Valinda was an active volunteer at the Oaks Academy since 20014 engaged in educational and life experiences specific to her daughters, but also the broader community. She frequently attended Lauds or chapel, was a Family Tree Organization leader and a go-to chaperone for many local and out-of-town field trips. She was among the first asked to serve on the CEO Advisory Council and even during the depths of her illness, she contributed to meetings.
She regularly encouraged teachers and staff, and always provided the support, care, and love for the Oaks community that promoted the culture of all being known and loved in the classroom, hallways, extracurriculars and field trips.
Valinda was preceded in death by her son, Levi John Thomas Burt. Valinda is survived by her husband of 17 years, John Burt; children, Jalen Stevenson, Ava Burt, Eden Burt; parents, John and Jean Stevenson; sisters, Machon Stevenson, Rolanda Brown and Ronald Brown (husband), LaThelma Neberieza (husband, Nicholas Neberiza), Carmen Burt (sister-in-law), in-laws, John Burt Sr. and Carolyn Burt; nieces, Morgan Brown, Lacy Neberieza, and Leah Neberieza; nephews, KyRhee Burt-Page, Akobie Woodley, and Daniel Lee Kyle Burt; and grand dog, Pascal.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 17th from 10am-12pm at Traders Point Christian Church, 6590 S Indianapolis Rd, Whitestown, IN 46075. Funeral service will follow.
