Todd Wuest was born in Ogden, Utah on July 11, 1962 to John Loren Wuest and Norda Mae (Kurth) Wuest. Shortly after his birth, Todd and his family moved to Vancouver, Washington. They settled in Northglenn, Colorado in 1964.
Todd was an easy-going kid with a big smile and an incredible sense of humor! He has always taken education seriously, even as a child. A story told by Aunt Carol…Todd came home from his first day of school. He was pale and had a very worried look on his face. When Aunt Carol asked him what was wrong, he replied, “Nothing.” She tried to get him to talk but he just shook his head and was quiet. When his brother, Mark, came home from school, the two of them began talking very quietly. Todd asked Mark if he knew how to read. Mark responded, “Not really, just a word or two.” Todd let out a sigh of relief and said, “Whew! I thought that I was way behind everyone else!”
Growing up in Northglenn, Todd grew to love sports. He played Pop Warner Football, Little League Baseball and basketball at Thornton High School, where he graduated in 1980. Todd attended Fremont State College in Nebraska, but then transferred to IUPUI in 1982 to be closer to his parents in Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree from IUPUI, and his Master’s in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University.
One of Todd’s first jobs was at an ice cream parlor. Talk about being in his element! He would lean all the way over the counter with his big smile and ask each kid what kind of ice cream they wanted. Those kids would leave the parlor laughing, believing that their ice cream was specially made just for them. That is just how Todd made people feel.
Todd was his sister’s “date” for the majority of Tuesday and Friday nights during Mary’s high school years. Her high school sweetheart, Bart, played football and basketball. However, none of her friends wanted to go to “watch” the games because they were busy laughing and scoping out the boys. Mary asked Todd if he would go with her, and he being the big sport fan, always said, “Yes!” This went on for three years. Those special years are Mary’s fondest memories of time spent with her brother.
Todd Wuest began his teaching career in 1990 as an Elementary Teacher in the IPS school district for multiple grade levels. Throughout his career he taught at Ernie Pyle, School 90, where he served as a 5th Grade teacher and Team Leader. In addition, he also performed as the Basketball Coach and School Transportation Coordinator.
Todd Wuest was respected by the staff at Ernie Pyle School 90 for the high expectations he had for his students. His peers and supervisors respected his dedication to the students, staff, and families of Ernie Pyle. Todd enjoyed golfing, basketball, sports, Star Wars and reading. He loved posting scriptures and inspirational quotes on Facebook, but most of all he loved spending time with his wife and family.
Todd’s daughter, Sarah Jayne Wuest, was born in 1990 and his son, John Kyle Wuest, was born in 1993. He was immensely proud of both of his children. He dedicated much of his time to attending their basketball, football games, and band competitions. He was always supportive of any activity that Sarah and John were involved in.
Todd met the love of his life, Helda Pounds, in the winter of 2015. They dated for four years and were engaged in 2019. They married on October 13, 2019 in the presence of many loved ones and friends. They celebrated the 13th of every month as if it was their wedding day. They were best friends and colleagues. By the grace of God the union was able to enjoy stepchildren and a beautiful blended family. While there are many things Helda will miss, she is eternally grateful that Todd loved the Lord, and she will miss the many prayers and conversations they shared.
Todd will be remembered fondly and with deep love as a caring and generous father, husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Todd was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John Elmer and Catherine Ellen Wuest, his maternal grandparents, Arthur Kurth and Gunvor (Kurth) Mills and Ennis Mills, his parents, John Loren Wuest and Norda Mae Wuest, brothers Kim, Joseph Wuest and John Edward Joseph Wuest, and a sister Jayne Ellen Simpson.
Todd leaves to cherish his beloved wife Helda Pounds-Wuest, daughter Sarah Jayne Wuest, his son John Kyle Wuest, Aunt Carol (Kurth) Walker, and siblings John (Paz) Wuest, Mary Beth (Bart) Ginther, Jeanne Wuest and Mark (Sue) Wuest.
