Thomas G. Kennedy

Thomas “Tom” Gray Kennedy, age 77, passed away Saturday, September 8th in Avon Lake, OH.

Tom was born August 14th, 1941 to Hunter F. Kennedy MD and Mary Catherine (Kahl) Kennedy.   Tom graduated from Cathedral High School in 1960.  He began his lifelong commitment to Indiana University by attaining his BS in Accounting ’64, Masters in Business Administration ’69 and JD ’71.  Tom earned the highest score on the CPA exam in Indiana in 1974.

His career included roles of increasing responsibility focused on tax at Arthur Andersen in Indianapolis, Cummins Engine in Columbus IN, Scott Foresman in Chicago, and finally US West / Media One in Denver CO as VP of Taxes. Upon the acquisition of Media One, Tom returned to his Alma Mater as a professor of tax at the Kelley School of Business.

Tom excelled at duplicate bridge.  He earned ten cents a point playing against top players in Bloomington to pay for his bride’s wedding band.  In retirement, Tom continued his passion traveling nationally with his wife, both achieving Life Master status.  He also loved playing golf and tennis.  Tom will be remembered as a devoted family man, intelligent and driven by competitive spirit.

He is survived by his spouse, Sue Kennedy, sons T. Grey (Cindy) and Mike (Jamie), grandchildren Madison, Tommy, Billy, Jack, JoAnna and Julia, siblings Hunter (Barbara), Michael (Terresa), Mary Anne Flanagan (Don) and Kevin (Ellen), and brothers-in-law Steve Cotanch and John ‘Sparky’ (Jeanne) Cotanch.  He is proceeded in death by his eldest son, Rob, his favorite person to share movies and buttered popcorn.

Service and burial will be held at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite) 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Friday September 14.  Friends and family will be received at 10am and service at 11am.  Refer to https://flannerbuchanan.com/ for updates.  Memorial donations in lieu of flowers to Indiana University account number I320001900 and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
