Thomas Frederick Burnside, 92 of Carmel, passed away on Monday September 21, 2020. He was born on June 9, 1928 in Detroit, MI to the late Charles and Ruth Burnside.
Tom graduated from Michigan State University as a Mechanical Engineer. He went on to work as the National Sales and Marketing Manager for Occidental Petroleum Corporation for over 30 years, and then Jessup Engineering in the same capacity.
After serving in the Army during the Korean War, he met his wife Eleanor. The two were married in 1955 and were blessed with a family of seven sons and one daughter. In 1968, the couple bought a century old house in the Grand Traverse Bay Area, which they renovated and restored. The house became a favorite vacation home for the family and their friends.
Tom and Eleanor retired to Florida in 1998, but the farm remained a place of “permanency”. They continued to grow in their Catholic faith and spend as much times as their could with their family.
Tom is survived by his children, Thomas J. (Mimi) Burnside, Tim (Rose) Burnside, Jim (Shelly) Burnside, John Burnside, Mark Burnside, Mary-Therese (Frank) Ciraci, Br. Christopher Burnside, and Patrick Burnside; eighteen grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He is preceded in passing by his wife Eleanor T. Burnside.
A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 am on October 3, 2020 at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church (17102 Spring Mill Road, Westfield, IN 46074). Memorial contributions may be made to the Carmelite Hermitage (8249 Demontreville Trail Ln., Lake Elmo, MN 55042).
