Thomas A. Powroznik

Mr. Thomas A. Powroznik, age 73, formerly of New Hartford, and currently a resident of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2017 at the St. Vincent Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his peaceful passing, he was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Utica on January 4, 1944, Thomas was the son of the late Walter Powroznik and Helen (Kowalski) Garrison. He also knew the love of his late step-father, Roy Garrison. He was a graduate of the Sauquoit Valley School system and went on to receive an Associate Degree from MVCC. He also attended Utica College of Syracuse University. Tom was a proud veteran of the United States Navy where he honorably served his country from 1966-1969. On August 3, 1968 he married the former Mary Ellen Pannick with whom he shared a beautiful, co-dependent union of almost 49 years. Their love for one another was evident to everyone. While residing in New Hartford, Tom offered his talent of repairing tube-style televisions, now an obsolete technology and a lost art. He began his career in electronics with the General Electric Company before relocating to Indiana Aerospace, Inc. in Indianapolis. His responsibilities required traveling extensively to the Far East where he was a Technical Support Specialist. Lastly, he was the Project Coordinator at Thompson Consumer Electronics, retiring in 2009.

Tom was a remarkable man, very honest, respectful, and personable. He was a gentle, humble man of great accomplishments and an ardent advocate of social justice. He held a deep conviction to his Catholic creed and his faith was the foundation that grounded as well as empowered him. Tom was deeply devoted to his family. He was blessed with a jovial personality and a hearty sense of humor. He was a sportsman who appreciated the tranquility of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and particularly golfing.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; his sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen Powroznik and Lisa Getman, Mark and Debbie Powroznik, and Daniel Powroznik; his grandchildren, Kevin, Christine, and Vivian Powroznik; and Nikki Getman; and his sisters and brother-in-law, Bonnie and Howard Dietrich, and Lucy Powroznik Yapaolo and Philip Yapaolo. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, aunt and uncle, Josephine and George Swift; in-laws, William Pannick, and Gerald and Mary Jane Pannick; and his lifelong friend, David Butler, with whom he shared a bond of brotherhood. He was predeceased by his nephew, Jeffrey Yapaolo in 2005.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 10655 Haverstick Road. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Flanner and Buchanan – Carmel, 325 East Carmel Drive, with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017, from 5-7 at the Eannace Funeral Home, Inc., 932 South St., corner of Hammond Ave in Utica, NY. Tom’s funeral service and Celebration of Life will be held on Friday morning at 10:00 at St. John the Evangelist Church where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Kevin Bunger with Military Honors conferred. He will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum at the convenience of the family
