Theodore -Ted- DeWitt Amos

Theodore “Ted” Dewitt Amos was born on August 3, 1922, the fourth in his family of five siblings, and the son of David M. and Frankie Barnes Amos, who are both deceased.

A World War II veteran, he was discharged from the Army in 1945 and came back to Indiana. At that time, he was reunited with his wife, Sylvia Athelda Amos to raise their family. A devoted husband, son and brother, he was very close to his parents who preceded him in death. He attended Virginia State University, and later worked hard in various jobs from foundry work, to entrepreneurial ventures and security work to provide for his family. He often held down two or three jobs at a time, prompting his children to remark that he would eventually “work himself to death”. However, that was not the case. When his wife of 50+ years, “Tibbee” or “Bibe”, as she was affectionately called by her family, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Ted retired to care for her full-time until her death in 2005, after 63 years of marriage, demonstrating a model of love, devotion, and caring. He and Sylvia were avid hunters and fishermen in their younger days of marriage.

Ted rededicated his life to Christ at Grace Apostolic Church in 1982. Several years later, he was consecrated as a deacon at Reign Oasis Center, where he was a member. At the end of his life, he became a member of God’s Way Ministries where he was dearly loved and respected by many across the miles. .

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ella Nicholson, and his siblings: David Amos, Jr., Lucydell Gamble, Idell Houchins, and Runa Josephine Wright.

He leaves to mourn his death his children, S. Faye (Charles) Queen, Gwendolyn Boyd, Theodora (Jerome) Williams, Denise (Timothy) Carpenter, and Mark (Dana) Amos, along with his grandchildren: Harold (Tanya) Boyd III, Jason (GiaBao) Boyd, Edward Williams, Jr., Elle Cabot-Williams, Micah (Jaime) Dorsey, Maurielle (Michael) Moses, and Ava Amos. He is survived by a host of great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and other family members and dear friends.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Calling hours will be held at Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center—Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd West Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46228 on Friday, June 16, 2017, from 10am -12pm. Following, a celebration of his life will be held at 12 noon. Burial will be in Washington Park North Cemetery.
