Thelma Mae Frances West, 103, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2021. Thelma was born April 9, 1917 to the late Charles Youree and Estella (Hayes) Youree, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband Fred West, two sisters, and one brother. Thelma was affectionately known as “Auntie” to everyone she touched. She graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1936 and returned to start her professional career in the Special Education Department. Throughout her decades-long career at Attucks, West held several positions. After her stint in Special Ed, she was made head of the bookstore. Then secretary to the department heads. Then secretary to the vice principal. At the time of her retirement, she was the school’s bookkeeper. Thelma was a devoted and faithful member of First Baptist Church North Indianapolis, for over 90 years of dedicated service.
She is survived by her daughter, Keana Beckum; Grandson, Keiron Beckum of Florida, and a host of loving family and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, February 19, 2021 from 11-12pm at Flanner Buchanan-Washington Park North 2706 Kessler Blvd West. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 12pm. Please share a memory or condolence of Auntie at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
West said she’s got one goal that’s remained constant through her century-long life, and it’s a philosophy that’s served her well: “Do what’s right.”
