Susan Elizabeth Flora

Susan Elizabeth Flora (née Zink) of Westfield passed away on December 2, 2017, at the age of 47.

Born on January 24, 1970, to George and Kathleen (Farrell) Zink of Anderson, she was the sixth of ten children. She was united in marriage to Arron Flora on June 12, 1999, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anderson. She earned a BA from University of Dayton and MA from Butler University; she was a Special Education Teacher at Noblesville High School.

Susan’s greatest love was for her family, especially her husband Arron and daughter Delilah, and for teaching. Susan simply loved teaching and loved her students. With a sly sideways smile, she often delighted in describing the antics of her students, and that same humor and appreciation carried over into the time she spent with her parents, her brothers, sisters, friends and their families. She always looked forward to annual trips to northern Michigan with her family, which involved lots of hiking, some camping, beers and an occasional cigar on the dock, and lots and lots of reading. Her daughter Delilah had a long-time love for manatee, so Susan and Arron organized a special family vacation for her that included swimming with manatee. Delilah was disappointed to learn that her mother, even as determined as she was, could not arrange a similar experience with live unicorns. Susan tried sky-diving and liked it, so she arranged a dive for husband Arron, who was skeptical (or, rather, terribly afraid) but ultimately loved the experience. Susan had an abiding curiosity and viewed even weekends and vacations as opportunities to learn something, to see the world in new ways, and to be with family. Susan worked hard, walked briskly, met all life with courage, and all people with an open heart. Above all, Susan was deeply and genuinely human and unfailingly kind.

Susan is survived by her loving husband, Arron, of 18 years; daughter, Delilah; parents George and Kathleen Zink; nine siblings, Bill Zink, Anne Corcoran, Cath Wyss, Joan McConkey, Joe Zink, Matt Zink, Jim Zink, Paul Zink, and Karl Zink; her beloved dog, Sampson; and many, many nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Susan Flora will be Wednesday, December 6, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at St. Maria Goretti Church in Westfield, IN. Funeral services also will be at St. Maria Goretti on Thursday, December 7, at 10:00am.
