Stephen Arthur Koers
Stephen A. Koers, 75, died February 6, 2021 at Community Hospital North. He was born September 18, 1945, the 4th of 7 children to Raymond and Roberta Koers. Steve is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Elaine (Koers) Roberts. Survivors include his wife Sandy (Wheatley) Koers, children: Steve (Kathy) Koers, Mark (Dawn) Koers, Matt Koers, Michelle (Sean) White, and John (Amanda) Koers; Siblings: Ray (Barbara) Koers, Pat (Diane) Koers, Diane (Rick) Martinez, Kevin (Kristi) Koers, and Anita (John) Boyle; Grandchildren: Meghan, Sam, Eddie, Molly, Jian, Willie and Jessie.
Steve was athletically gifted and starred for the Scecina Memorial High School basketball and football teams and was an All-City Center when he graduated in 1963. He signed to play basketball for Butler University but an injury cut short his playing career. Steve was so proud that he went back to college and graduated from IUPUI in 1975 with a degree in criminal justice.
While at Scecina, Steve met Sandy, the love of his life. They wed on November 19, 1966 and spent 54 wonderful years together. Their lives centered around their five children, sacrificing so much so they could send their kids to Catholic schools and college.
Steve followed his Dad, a Deputy Chief of the Indianapolis Police Department, and embarked on a decorated career with IPD, rising to the rank of Captain in only ten years. While with IPD, Steve worked in the Crime Lab, led the East District from the IPD Training Academy, and was the initial Supervisor of the then newly formed Sex Crimes Unit. Steve retired after 22 years with IPD and went on to own and manage the Koers Hilltop and Koers Hilltop North restaurants.
There was not a person Steve met who was not in some way touched by his infectious personality, booming voice and, most importantly, his generosity. He loved watching his grandchildren play and delighted in making them laugh. He was always quick with a joke, a good story or an unquestioned helping hand. Most of all, he cherished his family and lifelong friends. Sundays and Holidays were usually reserved for cookouts, watching games, reminiscing, and night-time card games where laughter was always in the air.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow. Steve will be laid to rest in Washington Park East Cemetery. Donations may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
Health and Happiness. Peace and Love.
