Stephen Curtis Rainbolt

June 14, 1947 — November 12, 2024

Plainfield

Stephen “Steve” Curtis Rainbolt, 77, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024. Born on June 14, 1947, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family and country.

Steve graduated from Southport High School before being drafted in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served in the 35th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Cacti," during the Vietnam War. His military career was distinguished with several honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge and Combat Infantry Badge, a testament to his commitment and bravery.

Prior to his term of service, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Marlene (Rose) Rainbolt, with whom he shared more than 50 years of love and partnership. Together, they built a family and a life filled with cherished memories. Steve worked for many years as a construction manager at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. He later transitioned his talents to a long career with the Indianapolis Airport Authority, where he continued to make meaningful contributions to the community.

A man who loved the outdoors and adventure, he enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, and riding motorcycles. He often spoke fondly of his travels to Hawaii, Australia, Yellowstone, and memorable motorcycle trips. Many trips shared with his Legion Rider companions.

As a proud member of the American Legion, he remained close to his fellow veterans and attended several reunions of the 35th Cacti Regiment, where he found camaraderie and friendship. Steve continued to honor his fellow veterans by serving as a commander of the Ernie Pyle Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), following in the footsteps of legacy established by many Rainbolts that served in this post. He remained a lifetime member of the VFW.

Steve’s greatest love was his family. He is survived by his long-time partner, Marlene; his son, David (Anna) Rainbolt; his daughter, Jody Rainbolt; granddaughters Kayla and Stephanie Rainbolt; step-grandchildren Matthew (Sarah) Shaw and Garrett (Maggi) Shaw; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Scott Rainbolt and Patrick (Tabitha Harris) Rainbolt. Steve leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and laughter that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Rainbolt, and his mother, Peggy J. (Gooldy) Rainbolt.
