Stafford Wallace Pile, Jr.

January 14, 1933 — November 6, 2018

Indianapolis, IN

Dr. Stafford W. Pile, Jr., age 85, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on November 6, 2018. Born on January 14, 1933 to Grace Anne (Rodeman) and Stafford Wallace Pile, Sr. in Jefferson City, MO, he graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1950 and the University of Missouri in 1954. His lifelong medical career began at the University of Missouri Medical School (1954-1958), followed by an internship at Philadelphia General Hospital. He then served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force in Wichita Falls, TX, where he met the love of his life, Clara B. Priddy, whom he married on June 25, 1960. Stafford completed his residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis and remained in that city where he practiced urology for over 35 years. Working at a number of local hospitals, he served as Medical Staff President of St. Francis Hospital (1989) and received their Distinguished Service Award (1998).
Stafford was a devoted husband and loving father to Cindy and Stephanie, rarely missing a dinner at home or his daughters’ school activities. He was an avid golfer and reader, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved learning about history and other cultures. He and Clara were fortunate to travel to many different countries during their nearly 59 years together. A lifelong learner, he regularly attended Scientech Club presentations after his retirement. A longtime parishioner of St. Pius X Parish, his Catholic faith was an integral part of his life. Stafford and Clara co-founded the Tamarindo Foundation with other members of St. Pius and traveled to El Salvador numerous times. “Inspired by faith & grace to break the chains of poverty and forced migration in El Salvador,” the foundation continues to focus on spiritual, community, education, employment and healthcare needs.
Stafford is survived by his wife, Clara (Priddy) Pile, his daughters Cindy Pile of Vallejo, CA and Stephanie Pile of Alameda, CA, sister-in-law Betty Mallay, nieces Mary White, Grace Schroer, Marty Olson, Beth Newman, Laura Schroer, Therese Schroer, Jo Ann Grossman and Tracy Priddy and nephews John Benton Mallay, Wally Mallay, Michael Mallay and John Priddy.
Stafford is preceded in death by his sister, Grace Ann Schroer, brothers-in-law James Schroer, Sr., Pierson Priddy, Harold Priddy and Jean Priddy, niece Betty Carol Mallay and nephews James Schroer, Jr., Fred Schroer and Bruce Priddy.
