Sondra "Sunny" Powell

March 6, 1940 — February 2, 2023

Indianapolis, Indiana

Sondra “Sunny” Powell passed away on the morning of February 2nd. On March 6, 1940, a little girl was born to Roy and Cecil Johnson. The baby appeared to be smiling, which prompted her parents to nickname her Sunny. Sunny grew up in Indianapolis and attended Howe High School and Warren Central High School. She graduated in 1957 and went to Ball State, graduating in 1961 with a degree in Elementary Education. Later that year, she married her college boyfriend, Bill Powell and together they had three sons. She taught elementary school for seven years and then became a student teacher supervisor for IUPUI and Ball State for the next 26 years. She volunteered for the Alzheimer’s Association and Washington Township Schools. She was a loving mother and wife, providing support, transportation, and meals for her family. She was a beautiful woman and will be missed many times over. She is survived by her husband Bill, her three sons Tim, Scott, and David, and six grandchildren.
