Sona Marie Lange of Indianapolis, IN passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Thursday, November 25, 2021. She was born December 30, 1935, in Milan, Indiana to the late Cary and Mollie (Caplinger) Gardner. She married Vernon Emil Lange in January 1953, and they were married for 68 years. Sona and Vern had 2 children, Mark and Linda.
Sona will be remembered as a warm and loving woman who very much enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Throughout her later years she faced many challenges with her health, but always persevered with a fierce spirit and the will to make the most out of every day. She and Vern loved to travel and formed some of their closest “chosen family” ties while traveling to over 50 marathons. She enjoyed serving as support for the runners, providing water throughout their training and races and was always ready with a hearty breakfast on Sunday mornings for anyone who cared to attend.
In addition to her love for cooking for family and friends, Sona enjoyed tinkering with things around her house. You could often find her attempting to repair some household issue. She fought an ongoing battle to keep the squirrels out of her many bird feeders! She also enjoyed gardening, even working to grow her own herbs and plants up to her final days. Above all else, Sona’s priority was always to support her family and friends. She was unendingly proud of her grandchildren and loved any opportunity to spend time with them. She had a soft heart for animals, especially the many cats and dogs that she “collected” throughout the years. Sona will be greatly missed, but those who knew her will always be inspired by her love and graciousness.
Sona was preceded in death by her husband Vern, and her son Mark V. Lange. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Lange Kennedy, son in law, Timothy Kennedy, and grandchildren Michael Lange, Ryan Kennedy, Kyle Kennedy, Molly Kennedy, Matthew King, and Kendra Lange.
Sona will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the charity of your choice as Sona supported many causes throughout her life.
