Shirley Joyce Mclaughlin

Shirley Joyce McLaughlin, 87, of Indianapolis passed away on November 2, 2022.

She was born on October 3, 1935 in Sulphur Springs, Indiana to the late Cletus and Carrie Ritchie.  She was the youngest of four children and spent her earliest years on the family farm.  Following her mother’s death, her father remarried, and the family moved to Hagerstown.

Joyce, as she was known to friends and family,  graduated from Hagerstown High School and moved to Indianapolis to pursue training as a radiology technician.  There she met Bill McLaughlin when he was “the other guy” on a double date.  They married in May, 1956 and raised their family on the east side of Indianapolis.  A devoted mother, she was frequently behind the scenes in her children’s’ many activities.  An avid reader, she always had a book, and later Kindle, with her.  She enjoyed traveling, particularly to a lake or beach.  Joyce was  a long-time, active member of Zion United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepmother Maude Keiser Ritchie, her sister Doris Burgess and her brothers Kenneth and John Ritchie.

She is survived by her husband Bill, daughters Deb (Ken) Macklem and Kathy (Bob) Coram and son, Jeff (Natalie) McLaughlin; grandchildren, Nichole (Alex Hill) McLaughlin, Tony McLaughlin, and Kelsey, Jackson (Cassie), Rob (Diane) and Colleen Coram; and great-grandchildren Sylvie and Lewis Hill.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 12:30 – 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 12, 2022 with service at 2:00 pm at Zion United Church of Christ, 8916 E Troy Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46239.
