Shirley D. Cline

Shirley Dungan Cline passed away April 30, 2022 from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Shirley was born on June 2, 1934 to Ruth Hollinger Dungan and J. Cameron Dungan in Troy,
Ohio, moving to Indianapolis in 1963. Shirley worked at Eli Lilly and Co. beginning in Systems
writing computer code before moving to the Medical division. She was the Global Clinical
Coordinator for the development of the Humulin Insulin Pen and then Submission Coordinator
for oncolytic drug approval to the FDA.

An avid volunteer, Shirley gave much time to many organizations including: The Children’s
Museum Guild, Eagle Creek Nature Center, Indiana Council on World Affairs, Girl Scouts of
Indiana, The Junior League of Indianapolis, The Eiteljorg Museum, Canine Companions,
Meridian Street United Methodist Church, The Indianapolis Museum of Art, and Kappa Kappa
Gamma.

Always physically active, Shirley enjoyed golf, tennis, paddle tennis, gardening, and being in the
woods. She loved living on Eagle Creek Reservoir in the trees among her creatures.
Shirley graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana with a BS in Zoology in
1956. She was awarded membership in the academic honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and
Mortar Board, pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority where she made lifelong friends, earned
a summer internship at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, and met
Stephen Cline who she later married.

After her divorce, Shirley gathered herself, returned to college and in 1980 earned a second BS
from Butler University in Computer Science. Shirley was then hired at Eli Lilly where she worked
for 21 years. Shirley flourished during this time; she so loved working at Eli Lilly.
When Shirley began experiencing significant memory loss, she enrolled in a research study of
Alzheimer’s Disease, bequeathing her brain upon her death. As with everything else in her life,
she faced her condition with courage.

The family is grateful to Bickford of Carmel especially the wonderful, dedicated caregivers in the
Assisted Living and Memory Care units.

Shirley is survived by her three daughters, Eleanor Cline Trent (Bob) of Kenwood, California;
Emily D. Cline of Greenwood; and Margaret Cline Curl (Michael) of Carmel; two grandchildren
Meredith Trent Gordon (Josh) and Oliver D. Trent; sister Jean Van Buskirk, of Baltimore,
Maryland; many nieces and a nephew.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2022 from 11am-1pm at Flanner Buchanan – Carmel.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Shirley by donating to either the Alzheimer’s
Association or Camp Miniwanca Scholarship Fund.
