Sheryl Lynn Kancs (Miller), 66 years young, passed away peacefully in her home on September 28, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and friends. A remarkable woman, Sherry was a devoted mother, grandmother, and wife, whose spirit and compassion touched the lives of many.
Born with a passion for helping others, Sherry was a true humanitarian, team leader, and advocate for children. A proud graduate of Pike High School, she was a cheerleader and gymnast. She went on to earn multiple financial designations. Sherry began her career in the life insurance industry with an entry level position at Indianapolis Life Insurance Company, made her way up to leadership and sales development of Aviva, and finally completed her career with a team she loved at Invst. Her dedication and work ethic exemplified her self-made spirit.
Sherry's philanthropic ventures took her around the globe, working with Habitat for Humanity in the Philippines, South Korea, South Africa, Mexico, Hungary, Georgia, Indiana, and most notably in Kentucky, where she met her husband, Juris Kancs. They were married in 2001 and merged two beautiful families together creating a modern-day Brady Bunch- 3 sons and 3 daughters. This union introduced her to the vibrant Latvian culture, which became a cherished part of her life. An avid traveler, Sherry explored Europe, cruised the Caribbean, and enjoyed the breathtaking beauty of the Mediterranean and Alaska. She particularly loved attending the Latvian Folk Dance festival in Latvia.
Family was always her top priority. Sherry was not only a dedicated mother, but also a best friend to many. She was known for her great listening skills and unwavering support- always believing in people's dreams, while also being direct enough to guide them back on track when needed. Her friends affectionately called her "The Hammer," for her straightforwardness and determination.
Sherry found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether it was spending time at her favorite refuge in Southern Michigan, Garezers, traveling to Florida or abroad, enjoying a glass of red wine, or kayaking in the quiet morning, she cherished every moment with her loved ones.
A believer in Jesus and the power of miracles, Sherry never stopped believing in and teaching the magic of life and God. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and an unwavering belief in others. Sherry is survived by her large family including her loving mother Alma “Granny” Miller, her husband Juris Kancs, her children Karen Baum (Kevin Brown), Russ Baum (Megan), Larisa Kancs (Jason DeVore), Eriks Kancs, Andrejs Kancs (Dina), and Lija Kancs, and grandchildren Taylor, Paige, Marley, Luke and Hayden.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and love during this difficult time. They have witnessed firsthand the profound impact Sherry had on so many lives.
In honor of Sherry’s life, we encourage all who knew her to carry forward her spirit of kindness, advocacy, and love for family.
In lieu of flowers, Sherry asked that donations be made to Latvian Center Garezers (www.garezers.org).
