Sherman George Askren, 92, of Indianapolis, passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2018.
He was born in Lawrence, IN to the late Robert Lee and Mary Emma (Record) Askren. Sherman was a graduate of Lawrence High School and served honorably during WWII in the US Army. He earned his B.S. in engineering from Tri-State University and worked for Naval Avionics, retiring in 1983. Sherman enjoyed bowling, golfing, camping and traveling with his family. He was an avid outdoorsman and served as a Boy Scout Leader. Sherman was also a charter member of Heather Hills Baptist Church, and a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children, Martha (Dennis) Clements, Daniel (Lynda) Askren, Sarah (J. Michael) Kinney, Deborah (Kurt) Livengood, Andrew (Melanie) Askren; son-in-law, George Kelly; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Sherman is also survived by his sister, Hazel Franklin; and brother, Thomas Askren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers; loving wife of 67 years, Joan E. (Cadle) Askren; daughter, Mary J. Kelly; grandsons, Joel and John Kinney.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 from 4-8pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. Funeral services will take place on Thursday morning at 11am, also at the funeral home. Entombment with military honors will follow in Washington Park East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to any local organization that supports International Missions work.
