Sandra “Sandy” Kay DeTar, 68, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on August 13, 2018. She was born February 21, 1950 in Las Vegas, Nevada to Calvin and Martha Owens; one of four children.
Sandy graduated from Francis Howell High School in Missouri in 1969. She met the love of her life, James, in November of 1973. Husband James states the two were an unlikely pair. Sandy decided if James wanted to date her he had to cut his long hair; she did so herself. The pair’s first date, they drove around in Decatur, Illinois, enjoyed hamburgers and a Coke, and the rest is history. She became Mrs. James DeTar on March 25, 1974. They remained deeply in love for 44 years, living a beautiful life together. Sandy had a heart of gold, she was known for picking up “strays” be it animals or humans, she took anyone in need into her heart. Family describes her as a second mom to all and the family caretaker. She was a gullible woman who never complained and truly cherished her family and life. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and deeply committed to her faith, that provides her family peace during this transition.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Martha; and brothers, Jerry and Jimmy. Surviving to carry on her legacy are husband of 44 years, Jim; children, Gerald (Michelle), Angela, Crystal, and James II (Valerie); sisters, Shirley and Jacquie; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; her beloved dog, Logan; as well as a host of extended family members and friends who are deeply saddened by her loss.
