Samuel Hatten was born on May 22, 1928 to Ardella McCarty Buckley in Wiggins, MS. At the age of 15, he moved to Indianapolis where he professed his relationship with Christ at Good Samaritan MBC.
Sam earned his high school diploma from Crispus Attucks High School in 1948 and his Associates Degree from Purdue University.
On May 3, 1953 Sam married Anna Lynn Branner. To that union was born S. Jiendesha and Fonda Kay.
Sam was a part the Flanner House project, the first sweat equity home ownership program in the US. He built his home and proudly proclaimed that he knew where every stud was.
Sam and Anna Lynn explored the country by taking their children on road trips every year. They explored 48 states by car, stopping to see the historic sites in each location. Later, after the children were grown, he and Anna Lynn traveled to 6 continents. After retiring from Bryant Heating and Cooling with 35 years of service, Sam first worked as a maintenance man for the church and then found the job he loved – He was a chauffeur for Carey.
Sam lived to see his 90th birthday. He was preceded in death by his mother and his wife of 62 years.
Sam is survived by his son, Jiendesha (Teresa) Hatten; daughter, Fonda Kay Summerville; grandsons, Juan (Dawn) Culp, Samuel (Dawn) Summerville, Spencer (Erica) Summerville; Sterling (Erica, fiancé) Summerville and Stuart Summerville; great grandchildren, Zachary Lewis, Samuel Elijah Summerville and Sydney Summerville.
The family would like to thank JP Stancil and Eugene Hobbs for their unfailing friendship and kindness towards Sam.
