Sammie Lee Self

Mr. Sammie Lee Self, was born March 14, 1940, to the late Louise Cooper Self and Rev. Joe Self Sr. in Inverness, MS. In his early years, he operated tractors as a sharecropper in Itta Bena, MS.

Mr. Self was united in holy matrimony to Annie Earl Warren Self on December 26, 1959, who preceded him in death on July 30, 2003. This union was blessed with five children. On August 17, 2008, he married Patricia “Ann” Wilson Self and became a proud stepfather to her two sons.

Mr. Self was a father and mentor to many, and an enemy to none. As a result of his generous spirit and sweet personality, he was loved by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a man of noble character and often referred to as “The Gentle Giant”. His Christian life began in his adulthood and transformed him into a man whose influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew him. He was a faithful member of Caldwell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church. Mr. Self dedicated 26 years of his life working for General Motors Allison Transmission, Inc. before retiring in 2005. He spent his retirement years as an entrepreneur where he built and repaired lawn equipment, industrial machines, and cared for lawns.

Mr. Self quietly departed this life Friday, April 3, 2020 at IU Health-Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was also preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Clifford Lee Manuel, Jr.; great-grandson, Zickey Terrell Self Jr.; brother, Joe Self, Jr, and sister Lula “Pearlie Mae” Griggs.

His beautiful legacy will forever be cherished in the lives of his children: Randy Self, Annie “Pearl” Self; Cassandra “Red” Givens (Troy); Rosetta Self Bolden (Rev. Freddie); Lula Mae Self-Lomax (Larry); Michael Green (Jessica); Yancy Green (Tiffany); 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; five sisters: Martha Jackson of Greenwood, MS; Barbara Dandridge of Crete, IL; Mary Vaughn of Calumet City, IL; Evelean Allen of Markham, IL; Alberta Meeks (Willie) of Itta Bena, MS; two brothers: Tommie Self (Tommie “Apple”) of University Park, IL; Jacob “Jerome” Self of Lansing, MI; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord righteous Judge, will award to me on that day.” 2 Timothy 4: 7-8
