Sally Jo Ohmart

Sixty two years ago, Sally married her (surviving) spouse, Paul Edward Ohmart.  They had two daughters, Kim Ohmart Laurin (Sam) and Karen Ohmart McAvoy (David).  Sally had five grandchildren:  Jessica Laurin Meek (Andrew), Vilda Samuel (V.S.) Laurin IV, Alyson Lee McAvoy, Ryan Edward McAvoy, and Kyle Ean McAvoy.

Sally graduated from Miami University (Oxford, OH), and also completed her Master of Education degree from Indiana University (Bloomington, IN).  She began teaching at Crooked Creek Elementary (MSD Washington Township, Indianapolis), and also taught at Central Elementary school (Lebanon Community School Corporation) for 22 years.  She also was a facilitator with the CLASS (Connected Learning Assures Student Success) program.

Philanthropically, Sally was involved with many organizations, including:  Alpha Delta Kappa (past Indiana state president), Clowes Hall women’s group (past president), the Indianapolis Council of Women (past president), American Association of University Women, Day Nursery Indianapolis Auxiliary, and the Indianapolis Symphony North Group.

Spiritually beyond church, Sally was a 50 year member and a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star (Broad Ripple, IN) and a past Honor Queen of Job’s Daughters (Columbus, OH).

Sally and Paul started their lives together in Indianapolis, resided in Lebanon, IN for 24 years, and moved to Carmel, IN in 1998.   For the past 5 years, they lived at Woodland Terrace of Carmel Senior Living Residence.  While there, Sally was active in book club, Bible study, art club, and a writing group.  Over all these decades, a highlight was enjoying their property at Lake Wawasee.

Sally’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 19^th at Flanner Buchanan Carmel.  Visitation is at 12:30, followed by a 1 pm service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the IN United Methodist Children’s Home at iumch.org.
