Ruth Bloss went to be with her heavenly family on February 9, 2020, just shy of her 95th birthday.
Born on a farm in Walton, IN, she received her high school education from the Indiana School for the Blind. She became a homemaker and took on many responsibilities including being a seamstress, sewing/clothing repair, answering phone for a piano tuner, listening to PBS radio station for specific ads, and was a Secretary for the Alumni at the Indiana School for the Blind for 50 years.
She enjoyed babysitting and weekend stays at her home with grandchildren, and later great grandchildren. She had a passion for helping low vision and the blind transition from home and school to everyday living (Kim, Chris, Alicia, and Jeff). She also provided living quarters to numerous others. She had the pleasure of opening her home to a blind traveler from Italy (Gemma) who wished to learn the American way of life, and they remained correspondents for many years.
Ruth participated on numerous committees at school, church and was affiliated with the ACB (American Council for The Blind). She was a spokesperson for “Upper Room International” located in Nashville TN, where her motto was “she liked to touch and feel her words through braille publications” rather than audio.
She is survived by her three children, Bruce (Linda) Bloss, Phyllis Junger, and Julia Shafer; 8 grandchildren, Shannon (Marc), Dawn (Scott), Brian (Stacey), Jonathan (Emily), Monica (Darius), Crystal, Nancy (Robert), Jeremiah (Kim), and 14 great grandchildren, Ashley, Hunter, James, Michael, Natalee, Baylee, Jackson, Jacob, Jace, Jared, Violet, Ruby, Ivy, Leo, and one on the way; sister-in-law Mary Helen “Babe” Carey; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Byron T. Bloss; parents Elias and Ida Carey, and brother Joseph Carey.
Visitation will be held Saturday, February 15 from 12 to 2 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East, 10722 E. Washington St, Indianapolis with Funeral Services beginning at 2 PM. Burial will follow at Washington Park East Cemetery.
