Ronald B. Rice, M.D. died at age 86 on January 20, 2020, at his home in Carmel, Indiana. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Charlotte and Raymond M. Rice, M.D., both of whom predeceased him. His twin brother, Raymond D. Rice, M.D. also predeceased him.

He was a graduate of Broad Ripple High School, Indiana University, and the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Cincinnati General Hospital and at the Indiana University Medical Center. He served 2 years in the U.S. Air Force as Captain and was based at RAF Alconbury, England.

He married Marcia Edwards in 1964 and began private practice in Indianapolis that same year. In 1970, the family located to the St. Louis area where he practiced at the Boonslick Medical Clinic, St. Joseph Hospital and as campus physician for Lindenwood College, all in St. Charles, Missouri.

In 1977, the family returned to the Indianapolis area where he relocated his private medical practice and served on the medical staff of St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

He was most proud that as a youth, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Bronze Palm in the Boy Scouts of America. Ron’s avocational passion was golf, culminating in 3 holes-in one, two of which were achieved on the same hole, on the same day of the year, 55 years apart at Meridian Hills Country Club where he played from age nine until recent years.

His memberships included the American and Indiana State Medical Associations, American College of Physicians, Beta Theta Pi, Scientech, Service Club, Lambs Club and Players Club. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Center and the St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf-St. Louis.

Ronald is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marcia, daughter Leigh-Anne Rice-Weddle (Scott), son Gregory M. Rice (Sue) and three grandchildren: Alexandra and Parker Rice and Charlotte Weddle.

Services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 6050 North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, on Saturday, February 1, 2020. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Lilly Room at the church until the start of the service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Washington Park North Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf-Indianapolis, at 9192 Waldemar Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268 for the Ronald B. Rice Family Fund, the purpose of which is to assist in support services of young hearing impaired children who are attending regular classes in their local public or private schools.
