Roger Glenn Reed

June 30, 1934 — July 20, 2024

Roger Reed passed away peacefully in his Indianapolis home July 20, 2024 at the age of 90. He is survived by his two sons, Davie Reed (65) of Indianapolis, and Harvey Reed (66) and his wife, Barbara Reed (66), both of Cape Coral, FL. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, and father.

Roger was born in Horse Cave, KY, youngest of Vernon and Nora Reed's five children who later moved to southern Indiana. He met his beautiful wife, Astrid, a runner up for Miss Costa Rica, while serving in the Army in Europe after WWII. Pursuing a career in refrigeration and electrical engineering, Roger moved his family from southern Indiana to Rocky Hill, CT, then to Indianapolis, IN. He ultimately built a successful career as an engineer in the building trades, with a passion for complex hospital renovations.

Roger expanded his passion for projects together with Astrid. They immersed themselves in hobbies such as photography, gemstones, and exotic fish breeding. Then they rolled up their sleeves to do the necessary research and development and filings, to be granted 14 patents in photography. Later, Astrid developed rapid onset ALS, and Roger’s deep devotion to Astrid was heartfelt as he cared for her until she passed at the age of 66.

As a devoted father, Roger guided and supported his sons through their life's milestones, challenges, and triumphs. He passed on his love for age old mysteries of life to his son Davie, and his love for complex projects to his son Harvey. Roger also enjoyed art and shared this passion with Harvey's wife, Barbara.

In later years, Roger very much enjoyed time with his niece, Debby Fletcher, with whom they had many long walks in neighborhood parks, and her husband, Richard Fletcher, with whom he loved to go to Costco and eat hotdogs. As Roger's vision grew weaker, Debby and Richard's son, Nicholas Fletcher, helped Roger maintain contact with the world using voice to send text messages to loved ones. Richard used his deep construction knowledge to make Roger's physical environment safer and more accommodating as he grew weaker. Debby's knowledge of how to navigate caregiving and hospice was invaluable. Their constant company and care of Roger in his last years is deeply appreciated by all who survived.

He enjoyed spending his time with his son, Davie, contemplating the universe and with his son, Harvey, playing chess as well as talking politics with whomever else would listen.

Roger was a talented, quiet, and reserved person and, as such, there will be no funeral or service. In lieu of visitation, please send a donation to: Project ALS, https://projectals.org/
