Dr. Robert Louis Kunkel of Indianapolis died on Thursday, November 22, 2018. He was 88.
Dr. Kunkel was born in Cincinnati on May 30, 1930, the third child of Theodore and Sophie (Kenning) Kunkel. He attended St. Gregory Seminary and considered becoming a Catholic priest, but he found his vocation in medicine. Dr. Kunkel earned his undergraduate degree from Xavier University. He attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1961. Dr. Kunkel went on to a long and distinguished career as a psychiatrist in private practice in Cincinnati. He also served patients and colleagues as director of psychiatry at The Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati.
Dr. Kunkel is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Maria Kunkel, and four children: Robert L. Kunkel Jr. (Barbara) of Cincinnati; Paul Kunkel of Evanston, IL; Jerome Kunkel (Pam Sears) of Cincinnati; and Mary Fox (Geoff) of San Francisco. Dr. Kunkel is survived by two stepdaughters, Anne (Jim) Anderson of Fortrose, Scotland, and Judith Cebula (Mike Redmond) of Indianapolis. Dr. Kunkel is survived by 10 grandchildren, Sam and Lee Kunkel; Emily, Jacob, Joseph and Grace Kunkel; Nicholas and Madeleine Kunkel; Laing Anderson; and Elizabeth Redmond.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., December 15, 2018 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 46th and Illinois Streets, Indianapolis, IN. Memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Charities Indianapolis.
