Robert Lee “Bob” Nelson, 76, of Indianapolis, passed away on Friday August 20, 2021. He was born on December 31, 1944 in Eldorado, Illinois to the late Lawrence and Anna Ruby (Jones) Nelson. Bob was raised on a farm in Carmi, Illinois and farmed with his dad and grandfather in his early years. After high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Army Reserves for one year before moving to Indiana. He owned his own heating, electric and plumbing company for almost 10 years. Bob also worked at Amtrak for 28 years, retiring in 2007. While at Amtrak, he and his wife, Susan, owned and operated Nelson’s Lawn and Power Shop for 10 years. Bob and his wife also operated a Karaoke business for several years. Bob enjoyed deer hunting, photography, tractor pulls, working on and racing cars, watching Nascar races, and was always happiest when he was helping others, no matter the project. He was an active member of the Moose Lodge in Beech Grove where he served as Governor and Administrator and was a member of the American Legion.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Susan Kay (Atkinson) Nelson; children, Robert Troy Nelson, Tina Marie (Dean) Roller, and Matthew Lee (Laurie) Nelson; grandchildren, Harley, Max, Lauren, Tanner, Adam, Aaron, Shaun, Kyle, Dylan, and Zach; and great-grandchildren, London, Harper, and Cortland. He is preceded in death by his parents, his infant sisters, and brothers, James and David Nelson.
Visitation will be held on Saturday August 28, 2021 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 pm, with a private burial at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
