Robert Jackson Cain passed away on January 30, 2021 at the age of 81. Robert was born in Port Deposit, Maryland on September 18, 1939, the 12th of 13 children born to his parents, Benjamin and Pearline (Boddy) Cain. Robert graduated from George Washington High School in Elkton, MD.
Following high school, Robert began a long career with the U.S. Army. He served in many capacities during his military career, first as Infantry, then Honor Guard, followed by Transportation and eventually working his way up to the rank of Master Sergeant. Robert served his country honorably during two tours in Vietnam and the Korean War. He retired from the Army in 1981.
Following his retirement from the Army, Robert worked as a civilian at Ft. Benjamin Harrison. He then earned his degree in Respiratory Therapy from Ivy Tech and worked with infants at Wishard Memorial Hospital. Later, he went on to a career with the United States Postal Service, where he served as a mail clerk, retiring from there as well.
Robert was a former Grand Master of the Harmony Masonic Lodge #70. He was also a member of the Knights Templar.
Robert Cain committed his life to the Lord at an early age at home in Port Deposit, Maryland. Then, he attended Greater Saint Mark Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Robert was a true mentor, always taking time to explain the how’s and why’s and truly investing himself into others. He had a PhD in Life! He was a constant learner who never stopped seeking out ways to invest in and improve upon himself and in turn, he was always eager to share that wealth of knowledge with others.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and all 12 of his siblings.
Robert will be lovingly missed by the love of his life, his wife of 42 years, Betty (Brown) Cain. The two were married on February 18, 1978. Also surviving are his beloved children: daughters, Angelea Willis (Eric) and LaTanya Cain and sons, Bruce Cain (Crystal) and Roderick Brown; nine grandchildren: Joshua, Jasmine, Jared, Jonathan, Joy, Janna, Joel, Naomi and Bruce; 6 great-grandchildren; and many other loving extended family members and friends.
Memorial services will be held privately on February 9, 2021 at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Burial with military honors will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
