Robert (“Bob”) William Van Dyke was born on April 24, 1946, in Beech Grove, IN. Bob passed away on October 4, 2024. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine (Bloemhof) Van Dyke. His sister is Eleanor Hood. On June 30, 1973, he married Julia (“Susie”) Scott.
He was a 1964 graduate of Thomas Carr Howe High School in Indianapolis. He received an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering technology from IUPUI. He worked for 45 years as a tool and die maker for General Motors, retiring in 2010. He joined the United States Army in 1966, completed officer training in 1967, and served in Vietnam, being honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant in 1968. He and Susie moved to Avon, Indiana in 1974. He was an active member of El-Bethel Baptist Church in Avon, where he served as a deacon, groundskeeper, bus driver, and song leader, For the past twenty years, Bob was a member of Calvary Church in Plainfield where he was a choir member and bus driver. He was active as a troop leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and enjoyed boating, fishing, gardening, and other outdoor activities.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Van Dyke, his sister, Eleanor Hood, his sons, Andrew and Scott Van Dyke, daughter-in-law, Katie (Condit), and his three grandchildren, Ezra, Silas, and Karis Van Dyke (children of Scott and Katie), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A viewing will be held for Bob from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM on Thursday, October 10 at Calvary Church at 1290 S Center Street Plainfield, IN. A funeral service will be held at 1:00. Memorial gifts may be sent to Calvary or to the Disabled American Veterans organization online.
