Robert "Bob" Harold Bergen

March 28, 1937 — January 18, 2020

Martinsville, Indiana

Robert “Bob” Harold Bergen, 82, of Martinsville, Indiana passed away January 18, 2020. He was born March 28, 1937 in Milroy, Indiana to Robert and Letha Bergen; he was one of eleven children.

Robert, affectionately known as Bob or Tom by his loved ones, was a lifetime Indiana resident who spent most of his life living on the westside of Indianapolis. He moved to Martinsville in 2012, where he was able to enjoy a slower paced lifestyle with his family.  He met the love of his life, Rhea, at a local social function. The pair hit it off immediately and were married just a six months later on October 4, 1975. They spent nearly 45 beautiful years together and remain deeply in love at the time of his passing. Bob was a true jack of all trades, there wasn’t a broken thing out there he couldn’t fix. He was an amazing mechanic, certified welder, open water search and rescue diver, avid woodworker, and owner operator trucker. He even owned Bergen’s Truck Services in the mid 1970s to put his talents to good use. To say he was a hard working man is an understatement, there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to provide for his family or anyone in need. He also loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing, hobbies he shared with his sons. Robert also proudly belonged to the Masons (Scottish Rite and Shriner). Though all of these memories describe who he was, he is best described as being an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all. Bob and Rhea’s home was a safe haven for all and many proudly consider them their second parents; they shared their love and life with anyone who needed them. He believed in tough love and instilling solid values in those he loved, a true family man of his time. His passing leaves an empty space in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to meet him; he was truly one of a kind.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Letha; siblings, Mary Owens, Veletta Schook, Tresie Boulware, Becky Foreman, Eddie Bergen, Paul Bergen, and Kenny Bergen. Surviving to carry on his legacy are loving wife, Rhea; children, Cathy (Jim), Delena (Max), Rob (Vicki), Lonnie (Renee), Robert Jr (Patty), Sally, Brenda, Dave (Kelly), Pam (Calvin), Jeff (Denise); siblings, Clarence Bergen, Thelma Allen, Albert Dale Bergen; lots of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as a host of extended family members and friends who loved him dearly.

All are welcome to visit Thursday, January 23 from 4-8 PM at Flanner Buchanan – Floral Park, 425 N Holt Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46222.
