Rita Watkins May

Rita W. May, 81, passed away at home with her family by her side on November 9th, 2022. Rita was born on October 23rd,1941 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to Clarence and Mildred (Melfy) Watkins.

Rita is survived by her daughter Holly May, sister Linda Watkins, nephew William Dougherty, great niece Janie Dougherty, and great nephew BradLee Dougherty. She was preceded in death by her husband Jim May, and sisters Irene Watkins and Jane Dougherty.

Rita graduated from Hazleton High School in 1959. She spent many years working for the majority attorney’s office at the Indiana State House. She also wrote radio commercials and worked at the Indiana Department of Transportation. During her time at INDOT, Rita’s work on establishing handicap parking was recognized by receiving the “Key to the City” of Indianapolis by Mayor Richard Lugar.

Moreover, Rita enjoyed living a simple life and caring for her family. She loved working in her beautiful yard and watching basketball. Rita was kind to everyone she met. Her delightful and silly personality paired with her good sense of humor brought a smile and laugh to those around her. Her favorite quote was, “The most wasted day of all is that on which we have not laughed.”

A private family service will be held at a later date. Rita loved music and was a proud supporter of her daughter’s band program.
