Richard Garland (Rich) 69, of Carmel, IN passed away on August 18, 2019. Richard was born in Queens, NY and spent his early adulthood in New Jersey before moving to Carmel, IN with his wife, Katie (predeceased) and children, Shannon (Jeff) Knobel and Chris (Ann) Garland. Richard was a graduate of Bentley College in Boston, MA and enjoyed a full career working with Ingersoll Rand where he took great pride in his contributions to the Company and related work with the National Association of Accountants. He also volunteered as a former Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the Carmel Swim Club and was active on the Finance Council of his church.
Richard was known in his community as a generous neighbor, who made friends quickly wherever he ventured. He was eager to share his ability to hunt down a deal with his friends and neighbors, always ready with a coupon for a problem-solving device from the hardware store or for a nice family meal. Richard cherished time with family, and in particular, his grandchildren Nicholas (15), Michael (13), William (12), Stella (10), Lucy (8) and Maura (4), who will miss their “Poppy” dearly. Richard was predeceased by his parents Alberta and Richard, sister Elizabeth, and Brother In Law, Willie Otto.
The Garland and Knobel families are eternally grateful for all of Rich’s many friends and neighbors who have taken time to visit for a laugh or help with doctor’s appointments over the years, and in particular those who cared for him so well in his home and at Allisonville Meadows.
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 20th at 10am, immediately followed by a funeral service at 11am and interment at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Cemetery, 9001 Haverstick Road, Indianapolis, IN 46240. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Richard’s memory to Holy Spirit Parish at Geist.
