Richard H. Goertemiller

July 9, 1927 — January 11, 2023

Carmel, Indiana

Richard “Dick” Goertemiller of Carmel, Indiana passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2023, surrounded by his children.  Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Hameline W. and Marie (Clampett) Goertemiller on July 9, 1927, he and his brother, Doug, attended grammar and high school in Buffalo, New York.

At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy (WWII) and served until honorably discharged in 1946.  He then enrolled at The Ohio State University and joined the Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity.  He met his future wife, Elizabeth, at a Fraternity/Sorority Pledge party, dating off and on (mostly on) for four years before their engagement at the famous “Snow Bowl” and marriage in 1951. After graduation, Dick worked as a buyer and merchandiser for major department stores in Cincinnati and Washington DC before being employed by NCR Corporation in sales for 32 years.

He and Elizabeth, always active in their church, were longtime members of Orchard Park Presbyterian.  In retirement they enjoyed wintering in Sanibel, Florida, and Galveston, Texas where they developed enduring friendships with a special group of “Winter Texans”. They also traveled to the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, China, and Europe, and enjoyed several cruises.  And being true Buckeyes, they had season football tickets for over 50 years as members of the President’s Club. Dick and Elizabeth were married for 58 years when Elizabeth passed away in 2009.  Then Dick found a new love in Phyllis Graver, and they embarked on various cruises and trips until her death in 2017.

Dick is survived by his children, Dru Doyle, Lyn (Jay) Daugherty, Kurt (Lisa) Goertemiller, grandchildren, Evan and Elizabeth Daugherty, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
