Richard (Doc) A. Jackson, 89, Indianapolis died July 13 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He was a lifelong Indianapolis resident attending School 70, Broad Ripple High School and Butler University. At Butler, he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. This would be the beginning of a lifelong commitment to that organization. He went on to serve on the House Corporation, was the Chapter Advisor, founded the Rho Chapter Scholarship Foundation, and served on the General Fraternity’s Audit Committee. He was named “Hoosier Sig of the Year,” and later achieved the fraternity’s highest honor, The Order of Constantine, in recognition of his many years of loyal service.
He served in the Air Force (Indiana Air National Guard) during the Korean conflict as an accountant in Panama.
After graduating from Butler in 1950, he joined L.M. Henderson & Co where he would work for his entire professional life. He served as managing partner of the firm for more than 20 years.
He was a long-time member of the Columbia Club as well as a member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church.
He was a generous and kind man who will be remembered for his wide and diverse circle of friends. He served as a role model and mentor to many. He was giving of his time and could always be counted on to get the job done right. He was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining. A meal with him would start with a good drink and end with a good dessert. He made sure that everyone had fun and that everyone was included.
In his later years, he required help to be able to stay at home. William and Mike provided wonderful and caring assistance to him. He moved to the Barrington of Carmel with his faithful dog Bentley. The staff at the Barrington is to be commended for their outstanding service. They worked hard to ensure he was safe, secure and happy. Many thanks to everyone who touched his life and helped him on his journey.
He is preceded in death by his brother William B. Jackson and is survived by sons Scott W. Jackson (wife Ann) and Craig T. Jackson, grandchildren Heather Jackson, Sally (husband Coty) Roy, and Joe Jackson.
